Rufus
Amazon's AI shopping assistant that answers product questions conversationally inside the store — a new ranking surface where being quotable matters as much as being indexed.
Rufus is the chat assistant embedded in Amazon's app and site. Shoppers ask it comparison and suitability questions — 'which of these is better for a small apartment?' — and it composes answers from listings, reviews, and Q&A. Products it cites get a placement that never existed before, upstream of the search results page.
You cannot buy your way into a Rufus answer; you can only be the clearest source. Listings with concrete, factual claims (dimensions, materials, who it fits, what it does not do) and reviews that echo them give the model quotable substance. This is the same work good conversion copy always needed — the difference is that an AI now reads it before the customer does.
The numbers
- Rolled out to all US customers in 2024 and expanded across app and desktop through 2025.
- Rufus composes answers from listing content, reviews, and Q&A — structured, factual copy is what gets quoted.
- There is no paid placement inside Rufus answers today; clarity is the only ranking lever.
