Returnless refunds
Refunding without asking for the item back — Amazon's default on low-value FBA cases and a seller-configurable rule for FBM — because round-trip shipping on a $9 item is charity to no one.
When return shipping approaches or exceeds item value, requiring the return burns money on both sides. FBA applies returnless resolutions automatically on qualifying low-value cases; seller-fulfilled sellers configure their own rules (price thresholds, categories) for when a refund closes the case with the customer keeping the item.
Set thresholds from the real math — item cost + return label + processing + salvage odds — and monitor exploitation: returnless generosity is visible to repeat abusers, and abuse patterns route to Amazon's buyer-abuse enforcement. Configured coldly, it cuts cost per incident and lifts satisfaction simultaneously; configured sentimentally, it becomes a standing invitation.
The numbers
- FBA: automatic on qualifying low-value cases; FBM: seller-configured rules (thresholds, categories).
- Set thresholds by math (cost + label + processing + salvage) and watch repeat-abuser patterns.
