Refund at First Scan (RFS)

The refund firing when the carrier first scans the return — days before anyone inspects the item — which is why returns fraud works mechanically and inspection happens after your money left.

Amazon's returns experience issues the refund at the first carrier scan of the return label for qualifying orders — the customer is made whole immediately, and the actual item arrives (or does not, or arrives as a brick) later. Inspection and grading happen post-refund; discrepancies route to claims processes after the fact.

The operational consequences: FBA sellers reconcile refund-vs-return-received gaps through the FBA returns report and reimbursement claims (a refund with no received return within the window is claimable); seller-fulfilled sellers meet the wrong-item-returned world through SAFE-T. The design trades fraud exposure for customer experience — your job is working the claims lane it created.

The numbers

  • Refund triggers at first carrier scan — before inspection; grading happens post-refund.
  • Reconciliation lanes: FBA returns report + reimbursement claims (refund, no return received); SAFE-T for seller-fulfilled.
