MAP pricing (and why Amazon ignores it)

Minimum Advertised Price — the floor you set for resellers — which Amazon neither knows nor enforces: MAP violations on Amazon are a distribution-control problem wearing a pricing costume.

MAP agreements bind your authorized resellers to an advertised floor; Amazon is not a party and its systems race to match the lowest visible price anywhere. When a rogue seller breaks MAP on your listing, Amazon's repricers and Featured Offer logic amplify it instantly — and reporting 'MAP violation' to Amazon does nothing, because no Amazon policy was violated.

Real enforcement is upstream: distribution agreements with teeth, serialized product to trace leaks (Transparency doubles as leak-tracing), test buys to identify the diverter, and supply cutoff. The brands with clean Amazon pricing are the ones who solved their distribution, not the ones with the sternest MAP letters.

The numbers

  • Amazon is not a MAP party and offers no MAP enforcement — reports of 'MAP violation' have no policy hook.
  • Effective enforcement: distribution contracts, serialization for leak tracing, test buys, supply cutoff.
