Long-tail keywords

The low-volume, high-specificity queries — 'yoga mat extra thick for bad knees' — individually tiny, collectively enormous, and the only search real estate a new listing can actually win first.

Long-tail queries carry intent in their specificity: the shopper typing six words knows exactly what they want, converts accordingly, and faces sellers who never bothered to compete there. Aggregate long-tail demand in most categories rivals or exceeds the head terms everyone fights over.

Launch strategy writes itself: cover the tail in listing content (bullets and backend absorb modifier vocabulary naturally), win winnable tails first in PPC at cheap CPCs, and let accumulated tail velocity fund the assault on mid and head terms. Semantic search (COSMO) strengthens the logic — covering use-cases in plain language now captures tails you never explicitly listed.

The numbers

  • Profile: low individual volume, high specificity and conversion, low competition; huge in aggregate.
  • Launch sequence: win tails first (cheap CPC + achievable rank), fund the climb to head terms with the velocity.
