Variable closing fee
The flat $1.80 per-unit surcharge on media categories — books, DVDs, music, video games — a relic fee that quietly redefines margin math for low-price media sellers.
Media categories (books, music, video, DVD, software, video games) carry a variable closing fee of $1.80 per item sold, on top of the category referral fee. It is a legacy of Amazon's bookstore era that never left — and on a $6.99 used book it is the difference between margin and charity.
Anyone modeling media economics builds it in as a constant: referral (15% on books) + $1.80 + fulfillment. It is also why media sellers price against thresholds and why penny-book economics only ever worked with letter-mail shipping rates that no longer exist.
The numbers
- Rate: $1.80 flat per media unit sold (books, music, video/DVD, software, video games), on top of referral fees.
- On low-price media the fee dominates the margin model — build it in as a constant.
