Monthly storage fee
FBA's per-cubic-foot rent, charged on daily average volume — with Q4 rates that jump to roughly triple the rest of the year, which is why December stock strategy is a storage decision too.
FBA charges storage monthly per cubic foot of daily average inventory volume, at one rate January–September and a much higher one October–December — in recent rate cards, standard-size storage roughly tripled in Q4 (on the order of $0.78 to $2.40+ per cubic foot). Oversize carries its own lower-but-still-doubling schedule.
The planning consequence: Q4 stock that arrives too early rents the world's most expensive shelf space. The AWD arbitrage exists precisely here — upstream pallet storage at a fraction of FBA rates, drip-feeding FBA as demand arrives. Storage fees also stack with the aged-inventory surcharge; the two together are Amazon's rent plus late fee.
