GTIN / UPC exemption
Amazon's permission to list products without a universal barcode — the legitimate path for private label, bundles, and handmade goods, and the alternative to gray-market UPC resellers.
New listings normally require a GTIN (UPC/EAN) that matches the brand in the GS1 registry — Amazon checks, and mismatched or resold UPCs cause listing errors and takedowns. A GTIN exemption, granted per brand and category, lets you create listings without barcodes.
Apply when you genuinely lack GS1 codes: unbranded generics, bundles, parts, handmade. For a brand you intend to build, licensed GS1 prefixes remain the clean answer — exemptions cover the gap, but GS1-registered codes plus Brand Registry is the configuration that never argues with catalog enforcement. Never buy recycled UPCs from third-party 'barcode shops'; GS1 mismatch surfaces eventually.
The numbers
- Granted per brand + category via the exemption workflow; covers bundles, generics, handmade, and parts.
- Amazon validates GTINs against GS1 records — resold or mismatched UPCs are a listing-removal risk.
