Operator glossary
BSR (Best Sellers Rank)
The hourly-updated sales rank within a category — a relative, recency-weighted popularity signal that powers the orange Best Seller badge and every revenue-estimating tool.
BSR ranks products by recent sales within each browse node, updated roughly hourly with heavy recency weighting — a spike moves rank within hours and decays as fast. It is relative (rank 1,000 in Home means nothing like rank 1,000 in a micro-niche) and category-dependent, which is why the same product carries different ranks in its main and sub-categories.
Operators use it three ways: competitive velocity estimation (every revenue-estimating tool models sales from BSR curves per category), trend detection on rivals, and badge proximity — the orange Best Seller badge sits on rank 1 of each browse node, making node choice itself a strategy. What BSR is not: a profitability signal, or stable ground for decisions better made on your own sales data.
The numbers
- Updated ~hourly, per browse node, recency-weighted — spikes surface fast and decay fast.
- The Best Seller badge marks rank 1 in a node; niche nodes make badges winnable that head nodes never would.
- Third-party revenue estimates are BSR-curve models — treat as directional, not accounting.
