Backend search terms

The hidden generic-keywords field — 249 bytes of indexable text for the words that do not belong in visible copy: synonyms, regional spellings, misspellings shoppers actually type.

The Search Terms field in a listing's backend accepts up to roughly 249 bytes (spaces excluded from the count in practice; overweight fields simply stop indexing). It exists for legitimate variants your visible copy should not carry: synonyms, alternate spellings, es/mx-English crossovers, common typos.

The rules Amazon publishes: no competitor brand names, no repetition of words already indexed, no filler like 'best' or 'cheap', no punctuation gymnastics. Repetition wastes bytes — Amazon indexes each word once across the listing. Spend the space on genuinely new tokens, and re-audit after every copy rewrite: fields drift out of sync with visible text.

The numbers

  • Limit: ~249 bytes in the generic keywords field; exceeding it can drop the whole field from indexing.
  • Prohibited: competitor brands, duplicated tokens, subjective filler, ASINs.
  • Every indexed word counts once listing-wide — backend space is for words appearing nowhere else.
