Negative product targeting
The sponsored-ads control that stops your ad serving against a named ASIN or brand — it binds only product-targeted and auto-targeted ads, never keyword-targeted ones, which is where exclusion lists quietly fail.
Amazon's help text scopes it precisely: negative product targets prevent product-targeted or automatically-targeted ads from displaying when a detail page's ASIN matches. In Sponsored Products an ad-group negative binds that ad group and a campaign negative binds every ad group in the campaign, but sellers only get the campaign level on auto campaigns. Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display expose the same idea at ad group level only, and their APIs still take the older two-expression shape, asinSameAs and asinBrandSameAs. Amazon states a buffer period of 72 hours for a negative keyword and 96 hours for a negative product, and publishes a limit of 10,000 negative products per product-targeting ad group — a soft one, since the same page says Amazon raises limits as accounts approach them.
Three things the console hides. Negative ASINs do not protect keyword campaigns — the competitor detail-page impression your exact-match ad group won because the shopper's query matched survives every ASIN you paste in; the lever there is a negative keyword. Self-cannibalization is invisible by default: pull the auto campaign's search term report and read the customer search term column, where Amazon prints matched detail pages as raw ASINs like b00ipgvvz4 rather than as queries, grep your own catalogue against it, and negative sibling variations and pack-size ladders before you pay again to move a shopper from your 2-pack to your 6-pack. And there is no master list — campaign-level negatives on manual campaigns are vendors-only, so coverage drifts as soon as the manual side gets wide.
The numbers
- Amazon scopes negative product targets to product-targeted and automatically-targeted ads only — keyword-targeted ad groups are controlled by negative keywords instead, so an ASIN exclusion list does nothing for them.
- Amazon states buffer periods of 72 hours for a negative keyword and 96 hours for a negative product — these are Amazon's stated buffers, not measured latency.
- Campaign-level negative product targeting on manual Sponsored Products campaigns is vendors-only, so sellers must push ASIN negatives into every manual product-targeting ad group individually, against a published limit of 10,000 negative products per ad group that Amazon says it raises as accounts approach it.
